Does Temperature Affect Productivity? Evidence over the Short and Long Run
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper studies the relationship between temperature and productivity across space and time. First, using six separate datasets—the annual Current Population Survey (CPS, 1963-2015), the monthly CPS (1994-2014), the Census (1900-2015), the Quarterly Census of Employment andWages (QCEW, 1990-2014), the Longitudinal Employer-Household Dynamics (LEHD, 1997-2014), and the County Business Patterns (1987-2014)—I find no association between temperature and productivity. These results are robust to different functional form, different time steps, different measurements of temperature, different geographic aggregations, and heterogeneous treatment effects by industry and occupation. Second, I build and estimate a general equilibrium spatial sorting model where temperature affects the locational choice of both households and firms and affects productivity differently for each industry: agriculture, manufacturing, services, and business. Third, I use the model to estimate a counterfactual change in the distribution of temperature to quantify the potential costs of climate change allowing for the endogenous reallocation of workers across metro areas. The Short and Long Run Causality between Agglomeration and Productivity
This study is to investigate the short- and long-run causal relationship between agglomeration (localization and urbanization) economies and labor productivity in the manufacturing sector of 28 Iranian provinces over an 11-year period, 2001–2011. Fully Modified Ordinary Least Squares (FMOLS) method was used to estimate our long-run panel data model. The empirical findings suggested that localiz...
متن کاملForeign Knowledge Spillovers and Total Factor Productivity Growth: Evidence from Four ASEAN Countries
This study examines the dynamic relationship between foreign direct investment (FDI) and total factor productivity having controlled for other channels of external openness: exports and imports in four ASEAN countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. We employ the panel data analysis PDA (fixed effect and dynamic panel models) as well as the panel cointegration and Granger causali...
متن کاملImproving Long Run Marginal Cost based Pricing along with Extended Benefit Factor method for Revenue Reconciliation of Transmission Network in Restructured Power System
Abstract : There are several methods to cover the costs of a transmission system and distribution networks. These methods are divided into either incremental or marginal approaches, which can be either long-term or short-term. The main difference between the incremental and marginal approach is how to calculate the cost of using the network. In the incremental approach, simulation and in the ma...
متن کاملDeficits, Debt Financing, Monetary Policy and Inflation in Developing Countries: Internal or External Factors? Evidence from Iran
This paper focuses on internal and external factors, which influence the inflation rate in developing countries. A monetary model of inflation rate, capable of incorporating both monetary and fiscal policies as well as other internal and external factors, was developed and tested on Iranian data. It was found that, over the long run, a higher exchange rate leads to a higher price and that the f...
متن کاملLong-Run and Short-Run Causality between Stock Price and Gold Price: Evidence of VECM Analysis from India
The prime objective of the study is to identify the long-run and short-run relationship between Indian stock price viz., BSE SENSEX (hereafter named as BSE) and gold price (GOLD) in India. The daily closing price data were collected for the period of ten years ranging from 1st April 2004 to 31st March 2014 with 2490 observations. The study employed two models: Model one us...
